What’s Best for Profit – Blog or Static Website?

Friday, July 3rd, 2009 by Sam

I would say the answer to this question is ‘depends’! Depends on whom? Depends on a lot of factors. Don’t worry, I am sure you would be in a better position to answer this question by the end of this post.

First the basics

A blog (taken from the word ‘weblog’) is also a website but the more appropriate description would be a dynamic website. The dynamic nature of a blog makes it so different from a normal (static) website.

Advantages/Disadvantages

  • You need to update a blog regularly. However, a website can be updated once in a while. Due to this, blogs require more time and work in terms of updating content.
  • As the blogs are updated on a constant basis, they attract regular and more readers or customers.
  • A website is more descriptive. Websites are good for promoting products or services as all the information and benefits can be presented on a single page. It may result in increased sales as people might like to buy the product after reading the information presented to them.
  • Blogs help you in interacting with the readers and customers. Through comments, you can receive constant feedback from your customers and it will help you in providing better solutions in future. If you are aware of the views of your community, you can make a lot of profit in the long run.
  • Creating/updating a website needs technical skills and knowledge in the form of HTML or other such languages or website-building tools. However, blogs can be easily created or updated without any technical knowledge.
  • From SEO point of view, blogs are better than static websites as search engines love fresh content and blogs regularly provide updated and unique content. Also, blogs automatically ping search engines and invite them to have a look at the fresh content. This is the reason why blogs get indexed much faster than static websites. There are a lot of tools and plug-ins that make SEO for a blog an automatic process. A static website requires a lot of on-page and off-page optimization.
  • Blogs have a way for people to know how old or new the information is as it displays the date for every post. This way, if the content is new, people will know that the information or solution provided can work for them.
  • Static websites cost more to start and update in terms of money involved.

There is another dimension to this discussion. If you are already running a static website for a long time, you may want to start a blog along with it. This trend is being followed by many online businesses. Through such a solution, you can get advantages of both. You have a website that can act as a single information source for the customers and the blogs can provide constant updates about the website/product and help in collecting feedback.

So, what’s the best depends on the advantages you are looking for and the target market!
