We constantly keep on about content and its importance for SEO, but there is a lot more that content gives your website then just benefits in short term search engine traffic.
The thing about content is once its produced, its with you (or more precisely, your website) forever. We create content for two reasons, firstly to give our visitors something to read and keep them coming back, and secondly to help improve the amount of traffic we receive from search engines.
Let’s look at the first reason for creating content – Giving our visitors something to read.
People visit websites because they want something, either to buy a product, find an answer, update themselves on the latest information or simply as a way to pass time. The common factor between all the reasons people visit websites is what they find when they get there, a website without content is… well… not a website.
So the fact that the reason people visit websites is the content they find when they get there tells you how important it is, but having content is not the end of the story, your content needs to be appropriately written for your intended audience, and written well without spelling or grammatical errors.
Once a piece is written, your regular visitors can read the new content, and new visitors may find your site through search engines because of the piece you created, this leads us on to how your content helps you grow your site through search engine traffic.
The second reason – Search engine traffic
When you create content, it will, after some time, get indexed by search engines, and this is where the work of content creation really starts to pay dividends. Once your content is indexed, searchers will start to find it, and that will bring them to your site, when they get there they will read the piece and may then move on to read other material on your site, and if your site is of particular interest to them they may even make your site a regular destination for them to visit so they can read the new content you put up.
The great thing is, once your content is being found by searchers, it is there forever, always ready to be found by new searchers in the years to come, some may even link to your content, helping your piece move further up the search engine rankings and therefore bring you even more visitors.
So producing content is not just for now, its not just for the visitors you get to your site today, its for the new visitors of tomorrow and in the months and years ahead, an investment in continuous content creation is something that will always pay you back handsomely, with the efforts being compounded as your content grows and grows month after month with more and more visitors finding your site though the content you have had indexed by search engines.
Content really is the gift that keeps on giving!
