Optimizing for Bing

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 by Sam

Bing is the new search engine from Microsoft. Previously, people were not much concerned with optimizing their sites for Live search. However, with the advent of Bing, the scenario is changing. Only time will tell if Bing is able to give Google stiff competition. However, Bing is creating the right buzz. So, webmasters are curious to know how to optimize their sites to rank well on Bing.

Though it is still quite early to say what would work with Bing as there has not been much official news about optimization for Bing, but like Google, the following optimization tips would be sure to help:

Content still rules

  • Be it Bing or any search engine, content rich sites would still rank well. Optimization for any search engine is always about the content first and everything else after, optimizing for Bing is no different, so make sure (as you surely already do) that your content is first class and that there is plenty of it.

Place keywords at right places

  • Keyword placement in title and link is important when optimizing for Bing. Bing seems to give more weight to keywords included in the <title> tags and URL. The next important place to include keywords are <h1> tags and the Description and Keyword <meta> tags. As usual don’t over do the number of keyword repetitions (keyword stuffing) as this will only reduce your ranking rather than increase it.

Relevant backlinks from quality sites

  • When optimizing for Bing it is important that backlinks should be relevant to the page being linked to. The anchor text, as always, is also important. The backlinks should be from quality sources wherever possible so that this reflects well upon your own site when Bing is deciding on where your pages should rank.

Older websites are preferred

  • Bing likes sites that have been around for sometime. So, if you have an old and established site, it would do quite well with Bing compared to newer sites jostling for the same keyword positioning. Obviously there is not much you can do about the age of your site except wait, so if your site is fairly new you must work even harder on the other optimization techniques to make up for the lack of age.

When we get more of an idea on what is good for optimizing for Bing specifically we will do a more detailed post, until then keep on producing that new keyword rich content and you should set yourself up nicely to well in Bing.
